As most of you know, Exodus: Gods and Kings is Ridley Scott’s take on the Biblical story of Moses with Christian Bale playing the former Egyptian prince and Joel Edgerton filling the role of the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses.  The film also stars John Turturro, Aaron Paul, Ben Mendelsohn, Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley.  For more on the film watch these clips or the trailer. It isn’t easy tackling a famous Biblical story and competing with the memory of an enduring movie like Cecil B. DeMille’s The Ten Commandments. All things considered, I think director Ridley Scott and his colleagues have done a creditable job. (Remember, he took on DeMille’s The Crusades with his formidably ambitious Kingdom of Heaven.) Beyond that, the movie builds the intricate plot of a thriller all around Cumberbatch’s character. It’s no accident that this movie has the word "game" in its title — though we only sort of see the Imitation Game, a precursor to the Turing Test, played during the movie, just about everything else in it is framed as a puzzle or a game. Cracking Enigma is laid out with specific rules, and there are ticking clocks everywhere. It’s nothing you haven’t seen before — when one character asks for a six-month extension, you just know that he's going to hear back something along the lines of a stern "you've got six weeks" — but they all coalesce to form an ongoing sense of tension.

A lesser film would probably go so far as to explain that Turing is the true enigma that needs to be cracked. Fortunately, while that may be this film’s conceit, it is not so blunt with how it draws his character. Cumberbatch is thrown into the middle of a functional thriller and given the leeway to show us Turing and how a genius and a troubled man works. It’s pretty great to watch him do just that.
Hidden codes, secret meanings and mixed messages pulse through the reliable, old-fashioned, buzzing copper wires of true-life British period drama ‘The Imitation Game’. Snappy and not too solemn, but perhaps not as much of a psychological puzzle as it could have been, the film gives us key episodes in the tragic life of Alan Turing. He was the mathematician whose biting, anti-social intelligence briefly ran in step with the needs of the British war effort in the 1940s when he was employed to help break the Nazi Enigma code at Bletchley Park.

Turing’s wartime achievements – kept under wraps for years – counted for nothing when his homosexuality fell foul of the law in the early 1950s, sending an already fragile personality into freefall. Benedict Cumberbatch, no stranger to roles with a hint of sociopathic genius, delivers a performance more complicated and knottier than the film around him. The script tends to spell out its themes, repeating a corny slogan: ‘Sometimes it is the people who no one imagines anything of, who do the things that no one can imagine.’ Cumberbatch, though, defies the film’s simplicity. His Turing is awkward, determined, at times comically stand-offish (a description that could just as easily apply to his Stephen Hawking, Julian Assange and Sherlock Holmes).

The film gives us three periods in Turing’s life: his schooldays, wartime service and final years in the early 1950s. We intermittently hear Turing on voiceover telling his life story to a suspicious police detective (Rory Kinnear) whose curiosity after a break-in at Turing’s home in 1951 leads to him being charged with gross indecency. Yet ‘The Imitation Game’ is coy on the three pillars of Turing’s story – sex, science and suicide – preferring to nod to each without getting into the messy details.

Watch Citizenfour Full Movie, There are moments of white-knuckle paranoia. The interview is interrupted by a continuous alarm bell; Snowden calls down to reception, who tell him it’s a routine fire drill. Snowden is satisfied by the explanation, but disconnects the phone in case it is bugged. When he types key passwords into his laptop he covers his head and arms in a bizarre shroud, like an old-fashioned photographer, so he can’t be filmed. This is what he calls his “magic mantle of power”. It looks absurd, but it isn’t precisely melodramatic, and Snowden seems as if he both knows what he is doing and appreciates the absurdity of it all.

Meanwhile, governmental forces are ranged against him – and against ordinary citizens making a stand against snooping. Poitras shows us a scene from a US court case in which AT&T phone customers took action against having their affairs pried into. A sycophantic, bow-tied lawyer for the government tries to suggest that a court is not the proper place to discuss the matter. When a plain-speaking judge rebuked this weasel, I felt like cheering.

So what else can be done? There is a funny moment when Citizenfour shows how German chancellor Angela Merkel is far from amused at having her mobile phone conversations listened to by the NSA. It was an exquisite moment of diplomatic froideur and possibly did more to make Obama take this seriously than anything else.

Now activists are warning of “linkability”. In US cities, subway commuters are being asked to put their transit pass accounts on their actual credit cards. One card fits all, and also gives officialdom access to a whole lot more of your information. British cities are being encouraged to do the same thing with “contactless” cards. Maybe we all need to think again. Citizenfour is a gripping record of how our rulers are addicted to gaining more and more power and control over us – if we let them.

all I knew about Edward Snowden were his portrait in Laura Poitras’ documentary, Citizenfour, I’d probably regard him as a conscientious, brave young man, maybe an American hero. But Poitras, a very talented filmmaker who flipped from journalist to collaborator in this story long ago, has chosen to leave a lot out.

Snowden’s claim as a whistleblower, exposing the National Security Agency’s violations of civil liberties, rests on some of the documents that he leaked, which reveal that the NSA’s domestic surveillance was far more extensive than anyone had imagined—and, in a few instances, conducted in defiance of orders from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.

However, many other documents—which he downloaded at the NSA facility in Hawaii and turned over to Poitras and the Guardian’s Glenn Greenwald in Hong Kong—go far beyond exposures of spying on Americans.

 Watch Watchers of the Sky Online megavideo, It may be strange to call a documentary soulful, but that’s an apt description of Edet Belzberg’s "Watchers of the Sky," a moving look at genocide over the last century. Belzberg recounts -- through memoir quotes and evocative animation -- the life of Raphael Lemkin, a Polish Jew and prosecutor who survived the Holocaust and coined the word "genocide." Belzberg intercuts Lemkacz, a prosecutor at Nuremberg; journalist-turned-UN ambassador Samantha Power, who covered "ethnic cleansing" in Bosnia; Luis Moreno Ocampo, prosecutor for the International Criminal Court, building the case against Sudanese president Omar Al-Bashir over the deaths in Darfur; and Emmanuel Uwurukundo, a survivor of the Rwandan genocide now aiding Darfur refugees in Chad. Interlocking the disparate stories chillingly illustrate Lemkin’s belief that the urge toward genocide is a horrific constant in human nature.

"Watchers of the Sky" screens again in the 2014 Sundance Film Festival: Friday at 6:45 p.m. at the Broadway Centre Cinema 3, Salt Lake City; and Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at Prospector Square Theatre, Park City.


Watchers of the Sky is an unusual, jumbled, occasionally quite beautiful sort of anthology documentary. Director Edit Belzberg recounts the past and present stories of five humanitarians as they fought (and fight) to instill a notion of global accountability for war crimes. Firstly, and most radically, there's Raphael Limkin, the Polish-Jewish lawyer and linguist who first coined the term "genocide," and whose crusades quietly set the tone of the Nuremberg Trials, as well as the formation of the International Criminal Court. Haunting the halls of Nuremberg, the half-starved, sleep-deprived, nattily-dressed Limkin pushed for Hitler's mass-murder spree to be defined broadly as crimes against humanity that would render all systemic killing punishable regardless of whether or not an invasion, or "act of war," occurred, simplifying yet specifying definitions of violation that should be taken as a given.

Limkin died sick and penniless at the age of 59, after ushering genocide into the sphere of cultural awareness only to see it used as little more than a buzz word, which eventually did little to prevent or punish similar subsequent acts of mass murder, torture, and rape in Bosnia, Rwanda, Darfur, and Argentina, to name just the places mentioned in the film. But his ghost haunts the film's other subjects, particularly Ambassador Samantha Power, the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, whose book A Problem from Hell: American in the Age of Genocide won the Pulitzer Prize while serving as the inspiration for Watchers of the Sky. Limkin's work also informs the legacies of Benjamin Ferencz, one of the charismatic prosecutors of the Nuremberg Trials, and Luis Ocampo, the first prosecutor for the ICC, who also, earlier, served as prosecuting attorney for the "Junta Trials." Providing us a portrait of the refugees themselves is Emmanuel Uwurukundo, who lost his entire family in the Rwandan genocide and now runs three of the largest refugee camps in Chad.

Watchers of the Sky is often wrenching; there's no way it couldn't be with this subject matter. But this is, to put it mildly, a lot of information for one documentary, which inevitably devolves to resemble not so much an anthology as a slideshow of genocide's greatest hits. (Also included is the history of the Turkish annihilation of the Armenians, which partially inspired Lemkin's actions.) These people each deserve their own film, and while Belzberg's rapt, completest earnestness is moving, it tends to clog or block out themes that could emerge if given space. The United States, for instance, doesn't participate in the ICC, which is a stumbling block in the court's aim to achieve real global legitimacy, as well as a major irony for a country that hypocritically sees itself as the great worldwide avenger of the people. But this persuasive and damning information, key to the acknowledgment of a difficult truth of genocide as an ultimate manifestation of capitalist amorality, is inexplicably treated as almost an afterthought.

Details also get lost in the structural busy-ness. The moment dramatizing Lemkin's fashioning of the word "genocide" (depicted through haunting illustrations of his journals) is the best scene in the film, as it captures the weirdly ominous awe and power of yielding a word that perfectly fits the crime. But too often you hear summaries of stories of crusaders working through the bureaucratic red tape and camping out in hallways and badgering indifferent politicians, only to have those stories segue into other, similar stories before the initial anecdotes have been sufficiently fleshed out. Eventually, a kind of numbness is triggered, and Watchers of the Sky begins to disastrously court the very reaction its combating: that of a bored resignation that regards all the genocidal atrocities as the same rote, abstract procession of evildoing that's happening Somewhere Else to People Who Don't Look Like You. Shoah daringly courted a similar tedium, only to transcend it with a ferocious vastness of quotidian detail that rendered the Holocaust unspeakably real to even the distanced contemporary viewer. Belzberg doesn't manage the same nitty-gritty feat. Watchers of the Sky is the textbook definition of a film with good intentions, and it's probably a fine way to start a difficult conversation in a history or economics class, but it hasn't been molded into a work of direct, scalding, transcendent art.
